Growing School Gardens Summit | Young Gardeners Program Director Presentation

In April 2022, Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation hosted the inaugural Growing School Gardens Summit, which featured GOFM’s Young Gardeners Program Director, Honi Alexander!

The Summit united over 400 educators and leaders from across the country working to sustain school garden programs at the school, regional and national levels. The educators – and the nonprofit organizations they represent – operate learning gardens at over 6,000 school campuses, providing hands-on nutrition, science, and academic instruction to an estimated 2.5 million students each year.

Honi Alexander presented “The Beauty of Color Beyond Garden Beds” which covered the importance of diversity and inclusion in our Young Gardeners Program.

  • Fox 26 Houston: GOFM’s Young Gardeners Program Taste Testing

Fox 26 Houston: GOFM’s Young Gardeners Program Taste Testing

This week Galveston’s Own Farmers Market and Galveston ISD hosted the last of six district-wide vegetable taste-testings for 3rd graders.

The schools prepare the produce from the student-grown gardens and local farmers. The 3RD graders taste and rank the dishes.

GOFM was the recipient of a 2021 USDA Farm to School Grant, which was used to fund this project.

The Young Gardeners Program school gardens are located throughout the island.

The students learn to plant, tend and harvest the gardens. They also learn recipes and take what they grow home.

Honi Alexander, director of the Young Gardeners Program, says the children learn about science, nutrition, economy, full circle gardening, and farming.

Fox 26 Houston: GOFM’s Young Gardeners Program Sea Turtle Garden

Galveston’s Own Farmers Market’s Young Gardener Program is now teaming up with the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research at Texas A&M Galveston.

The students are providing much-needed vegetables to help rescued turtles regain their strength to return to the wild. The kids learn to give back, and the center gets healthy fresh vegetables for their patients!
