The Center for Violence Prevention focuses on improving the health and well-being of individuals, couples, families, communities, and societies through the prevention of violence.

The Center accomplishes this by collaborating with academic, public, and governmental partners to develop and implement evidence-informed screening, prevention, and intervention programs.

It’s getting hot out there y’all! Warm summer months are one of the most dangerous periods for fire-related accidents. Luckily, our Friends at Galveston Fire Department are giving us the quick 101 on Fire Safety & Prevention!

What is Juneteenth and why is it celebrated?

Known to some as the country’s “second Independence Day,” Juneteenth celebrates the freedom of enslaved people in the United States at the end of the Civil War.

In honor of this historic day, Nia Cultural Center will be at GOFM with a Pre-Juneteenth opening. This event will feature:

About Child Advocacy Center of Galveston County

After a child has reported alleged abuse, the Center coordinates interviews and agency collaboration. This period is critical, not only for the preparation of a criminal case, but also for the ability to minimize trauma to the child and family. Instead of going to a police station or government office building, the child is brought to the Center to be interviewed. Interviews are conducted in a child-friendly environment where both children and non-offending family members can feel more comfortable. Learn more on their website>

Join us in celebrating Jack Johnson’s birthday at GOFM! John Arthur Johnson, nicknamed the “Galveston Giant”, was an American boxer who, at the height of the Jim Crow era, became the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion. His memory continues to live on our island.

In response to the growing problem of youth violence in the early 1990’s Nia Cultural Center has provided family and youth empowerment programs. Originally a Community Youth Development program funded by the Texas Department of Family Services, the Nia Cultural Center’s Family Strengthening and Empowerment program operated from 1996 – 2006. About Galveston Historical Foundation

Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) was formed as the Galveston Historical Society in 1871 and merged with a new organization formed in 1954 as a non-profit entity devoted to historic preservation and history in Galveston County. Over the last sixty years, GHF has expanded its mission to encompass community redevelopment, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation, coastal resiliency and stewardship of historic properties. GHF embraces a broader vision of history and architecture that encompasses advancements in environmental and natural sciences and their intersection with historic buildings and coastal life and conceives of history as an engaging story of individual lives and experiences on Galveston Island from the 19th century to the present day.
