  • 9/4 – Passport to Freedom Project

9/4 – Passport to Freedom Project

According to legend, a safe house along the Underground Railroad was often indicated by a quilt hanging from a clothesline or windowsill.

These quilts were embedded with a kind of code. The shapes and motifs sewn into the design were a message to guide any enslaved person to safety or alert them of what’s ahead.

On September 4, Nia Cultural Center will be hosting a ‘Passport to Freedom’ activity to educate the public about the beauty and history of the Freedom Quilts.

    • Kids enter market and receive a paper passport: they must visit the quilt stations throughout and get a stamp—once they’re complete they get a prize!

    • Each station features information on the freedom quilts of the Underground Railroad, their history, symbol significance, etc.

    See you there!
