Program Director Duties and Responsibilities

Articulate the YGP vision, mission, and goals to local community-based organizations, school staff, administrators, students, families, and community leaders to generate support.

Lead all planning and development of new YGP sites.

Hire, train, and be a motivating mentor to staff.

Observe the work of teaching staff to assess performance, and to recommend changes that could strengthen teaching skills.

Provide consistent and immediate feedback, in addition to conducting an annual review.

Oversee the use of the curriculum and communicate to Garden Leaders any pressing needs to teach particular lessons.

Onboard and thoroughly train all new staff.

Visit garden sites regularly.

Lead large group discussions to answer questions and remedy complaints.

Develop and maintain key relationships with community stakeholders.

Initiate and set goals for programs based on Galveston’s Own Farmers Market’s strategic objectives.

Ensure that program initiatives are planned from start to finish, including identifying processes, deadlines and milestones.

Plan, develop and budget for annual training and additional training.

Develop annual budget in collaboration with GOFM Executive Director.

Review monthly budget versus actuals and provide an explanation of variations to the GOFM Executive Director.

Oversee the purchase and distribution of materials.

Identify and write grants in partnership with the GOFM Executive Director. Produce funder reports as required.

Regularly meet and confer with the YGP Garden Leaders, the YGP Gardens Manager and the Executive Director of Galveston’s Own Farmers Market (ED) and other relevant GOFM staff.

Co-lead Farm to School Planning Team with GOFM ED and develop a comprehensive plan for implementing the introduction of locally-grown produce & YGP produce into school cafeterias.

Ensure a strong relationship between the schools where YGP operates and the YGP program; conduct regular meetings with the principal and/or key school staff, and attend PTO, and School District Board, and other community organization meetings.

Ensure that specific family engagement activities are conducted at each site regularly, and that Garden Leaders are maintaining ongoing communication with participant caregivers at least once per month.

Review session reports and provide an overview in a weekly communication to YGP staff and GOFM leadership.

Ensure a timely monthly program report is submitted to the GOFM Executive Director.

Contribute to the organization’s annual report.
Program Director Education and Experience Requirements
-
Three years or more experience in youth development programs providing educational enrichment activities, preferably that include gardening.

Passion for food justice in the Galveston community.
-
Demonstrated commitment to building a local food community.
-
Strong verbal and written skills.
-
Strong, demonstrated computer skills including experience with Google docs and spreadsheets.

Ability to speak in front of a group.
-
Fluent in the use of social media.
-
Demonstrated ability to perform tasks effectively in a fast-paced, challenging, and constantly changing environment.

Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
