Now Hiring: Gardens Manager
Summary: The role of the Gardens Manager is to ensure adequate crop production at all GOFM gardens. They supervise the Young Gardeners Program & Victory Garden sites, and provide guidance and support to YGP Garden Leaders as required.
The responsibilities detailed below comprise an average of 30 hours per week.

Responsibilities:
For GOFM’s Young Gardeners Program:

Ensure that garden planning is performed on timely and effective basis
-
Work with YGP Garden Leaders to track changes to original garden plans & adjust throughout the year. This should include:
-
direct-seeding dates, seeding-in-trays dates, transplanting dates, harvest dates & any other relevant instructions. This is done in collaboration with the program leadership and Garden Leaders
-

Create visual map and/or spreadsheet for each YGP site and season’s planting guide
-
Support Garden Leaders with site garden planning and optimal abundance
-
Garden planning for new initiatives and programs
-

Supplies and Equipment Distribution
-
Purchase and distribution for equipment (such as power tools for maintenance or garden hoses, etc.)
-
Seed/materials distribution as needed
-
Help organize harvest aspect of food distribution
-
Oversee monthly shed inventory of garden supplies
-
-
Ensure Community Days are planned and successful
-
Fill out and review the Community Day planning form with each Garden leader and follow up regarding what was accomplished
-
Arrange for specialized volunteer groups as needed (Ex: local gym to come haul heavy bricks)

Garden Leader development
-
Ongoing training as needed and supporting corrective action (example, not spacing seeds correctly, identifying plants, soil care, etc)

Perform weekly garden walk-thru with the Garden Leaders

Program development
-
Planning future trainings
-
Ensuring that all needed resources are available for the Garden Leaders

Managing garden builds
-
Working with YGP Director/stakeholders on project management
-
Ordering soil/arranging for delivery/meeting crew
-
Building and managing build team as needed
-
-
Remain available to Garden Leaders for follow-up questions via email, text or phone call.

Attend a garden lesson at each YGP school to provide garden specific lessons as needed
For GOFM’s Victory Garden Program:
-
Manage all aspects of growing food at pilot Victory Garden (VG) site
-
Garden Management
-
Create year-round Planting Calendar, with emphasis on maximum gardening production. Calendar will include planting dates broken down by weeks and months. This should include: direct-seeding dates, seeding-in-trays dates, transplanting dates, harvest dates & any other relevant instructions.

VG pilot site should produce 3-5lbs of fresh vegetables to 15-20 families each week December–June.

Keep ongoing inventory of tools & supplies needed at each site.
-
Visit site at least 5x per week to work in the beds and assess garden production needs.

Vigilant care of all crops to ensure all are:
-
planted on-time
-
weeded & watered
-
immediately replaced when no longer viable
-
healthy & vigorous
-
-
-
-
Equipment and Tool maintenance
-
Purchase supplies & tools as needed and complete all necessary documentation on a timely basis.
-
Ensure that all necessary gardening supplies & equipment are stocked.

Harvest Distribution & Community Engagement
-
Coordinate efficient distribution of harvests every week in collaboration with VG site staff.
-
Support interest in VG among participants (families, clients, students, etc.) at site
-
Actively engage with participants to encourage & cultivate volunteerism at VG
-
For YGP & Victory Gardens:
-
Manage special groups who volunteer
-
Secure in-kind donations when possible
-
Attend meetings for YGP Garden Leaders, GOFM leadership staff meetings & relevant meetings with community partners.

Communicate frequently and transparently with GOFM leadership
Physical Requirements
Should be able to lift ~50 lbs and stand, squat or sit for prolonged periods of time
This job requires working outside, in all weather conditions, in all seasons.
Qualifications

A strong interest in environmental, edible and organic landscape design and maintenance.

Horticulture and gardening experience, education, or degree.
-
A positive attitude & strong work ethic.
-
Experience with production farming, landscape maintenance and use of garden tools and equipment.
-
Strong working knowledge of edible garden plants (fruiting vines, fruit trees, vegetables).
-
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
-
A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from job sites.
-
Familiarity with Google Docs, Google Sheets, essential computer skills and reliable and consistent access to internet.
-
Preference will be given to applicants that are passionate about sustainable food production and applying deep organic principles to garden maintenance.

Familiarity & comfort in working with children and strong interest/past experience in developing gardens specifically designed for young children and maximum food production.

The Gardens Manager should be committed to stewarding gardens that are in constant food production with age-appropriate garden plans which revolve around student collaboration and participation.

Compensation
The GOFM Gardens Manager is an hourly paid position ranging on average $300-900 per week, based on education, experience & seasonality. More detail available during interview process.
