About GOFM’s Real Food Project
In late 2017, GOFM initiated the Real Food Project, a multifaceted set of programs that all support increased food access, nutrition and community building in Galveston. The RFP includes Community Cooking Classes offered free or low-cost to the public & to private groups, Community Meals coordinated with partners across Galveston County, and most recently, our FreshBox initiative.
According to legend, a safe house along the Underground Railroad was often indicated by a quilt hanging from a clothesline or windowsill.
These quilts were embedded with a kind of code. The shapes and motifs sewn into the design were a message to guide any enslaved person to safety or alert them of what’s ahead.
On September 4, Nia Cultural Center will be hosting a ‘Passport to Freedom’ activity to educate the public about the beauty and history of the Freedom Quilts.
Kids enter market and receive a paper passport: they must visit the quilt stations throughout and get a stamp—once they’re complete they get a prize!
Each station features information on the freedom quilts of the Underground Railroad, their history, symbol significance, etc.
See you there!

In April 2022, Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation hosted the inaugural Growing School Gardens Summit, which featured GOFM’s Young Gardeners Program Director, Honi Alexander!
The Summit united over 400 educators and leaders from across the country working to sustain school garden programs at the school, regional and national levels. The educators – and the nonprofit organizations they represent – operate learning gardens at over 6,000 school campuses, providing hands-on nutrition, science, and academic instruction to an estimated 2.5 million students each year.
Honi Alexander presented “The Beauty of Color Beyond Garden Beds” which covered the importance of diversity and inclusion in our Young Gardeners Program.
