  • Pecans by Karen

    Pecans by Karen

    Say Hi to Karen!

    About Pecans by Karen

In 1990 my husband and I began making homemade candied pecans as holiday gifts for our extended family. Soon our three boys joined us. We all looked forward to the sweet aroma that filled the house every Christmas as we prepared our tried and true recipe for others. The overwhelming joy of those receiving our pecans kept the tradition going for 26 years. Then the unexpected happened. We never intended to begin a family business, but Pecans by Karen was born out of tragedy.

Eighteen days after high school graduation, our son Jacob landed badly in a foam pit at a trampoline park. He broke his neck, averting paralysis by millimeters. He had an amazing medical staff, as well as family, friends, and a wonderful community surrounding him. He decided to defer his college plans a year, while taking the necessary six months to heal. He then contacted Global Baseball and NEXTLVL Sports Institute regarding mission opportunities. He needed to raise funds before heading to Atlanta with NEXTLVL Sports Institute as an intern. That’s when the idea hit us – he could sell our much loved family pecans! They were a hit!! Soon others were giving our gift to the special people in their own lives.

Due to his success, Jacob’s customers asked him if he’d be selling pecans next Christmas. He responded, “That’d be cool, but I’m planning to be in college next fall.” My husband and I thought, “Hey, we’re going to have three kids in college soon – how about giving this a go as a business?” And so began Pecans by Karen. We now share our family gift- giving tradition with you in the hope you’ll share it with others.

    R&D Natural Living

Say hi to Raa & Des!

    About R&D Natural Living

Raa and Des are the two halves to R&D Natural Living!
The “D” is Des. She is half Thai, and half African American. She enjoys gardening, dancing, singing, music, and various other activities in the creative fine arts department.
The “R” is Raa . He is multi talented; being classically trained in piano, as well as being a trained musician in various other instruments. While also being talented in various other fine arts, he is also an Eagle Scout.
Raa and Des met during their sophomore year of high school (2011-2012) while he was in band and she was in colorguard. They have been together ever since.

When did you first get started?

During the 2021, during the COVID19 lockdowns.

What inspired you to start your business?

During COVID19 shutdowns, we were looking for ways to keep busy while also finding ways to make money. Des was working as a full time manager at a kids clothing store, while Raa’ was working as a full time musician, playing multiple events & providing music lessons. Wanting to work together full time, Raa began to research different ways to extract essential oils from the flowers & herbs Des already grew at home. We were already making natural beauty and body products, since Des was allergic to most mainstream skincare items. Thus started R&D Natural Perfumery. After coming up with new recipes with the things we grew while also growing new things, we expanded into R&D Natural Living.

What is your favorite thing to make/produce?

Since we grow and process everything ourselves, it’s hard to choose.
For Des, it’s the Chimi Chimi Bang Bang, a basil chimichurri. The flavors are out of this world, and it’s perfect on steaks.
For Raa, it’s our scent Kiss from a Rose, which is the first scent he made for our business.

Where are you from/where did you grow up?

Des was born in Okinawa, Japan and was raised in Houston, Texas.
Raa was born and raised in Port Allen/Baton Rouge, Lousiana.

Share a fun fact about yourself you’d like your customers to know!

Raa and Des are avid roller skaters. Envision the main crew from Roll Bounce, the movie. We love to spin, groove, and glide wherever we can.

  • Reishi & Health

    Reishi & Health

Say hi to Roxana & Josefina!

    About Reishi & Health

I am 50 years old and I am from Rosario, Argentina. I was raised in a family that has been running a Health Care Business for more than forty years. My father Francisco was born in Murcia, Spain, and moved to Argentina when he was 8 years old by ship. He traveled with my grandmother Adelina and my uncle Jose Luis, who was 3 years old. The journey lasted fifteen days. My grandfather, also called Francisco, was waiting for them in Buenos Aires, as he had moved a couple of months before.

Nowadays, both Francisco and Jose Luis are very successful physicians and entrepreneurs. They run a Hospital that is known for its excellence in Orthopedics, Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine.

In my case, I started Medicine School in March 1992. It was in ‘Anatomy’, my first class, that I met Hernan. We went through University together and graduated the same day six years later. We got married in 2000 and we had three children: Renzo, Josefina and Sofia. He used to be a Spine Surgeon and I worked as her neurophysiologist. In 2016 he was diagnosed with a very rare type of lymphoma. He died in 2017 despite all medical treatments. I was knocked by this sudden event in my life and I decided to make a change. Looking for new alternatives, I got into the Functional Mushrooms world. All of a sudden I understood that this was my new commitment: to grow functional organic food, as a natural way to promote health and longevity. I wanted to build healthcare solutions from natural, free of chemicals, preservatives or artificial flavoring products.

But that was not the only change; I wanted to build this new project in another country, following the experience of my grandfather Francisco. This time the trip was easier than his; just ten hours of flight brought me to Houston.

When did you first get started?

We arrived in Katy in January of 2021 and the new adventure started. I founded Reishi & Health, a farm where we produce edible and medicinal mushrooms and microgreens indoors. All under organic conditions.
When everything was running, we still had to arrange our legal status to stay in the country, as I found it very hard to run the business from Argentina. The American Embassy in Buenos Aires was closed due to Covid-19, but that did not stop me. We tried in Chile first, which was delayed for 6 months. I later thought about Spain. My attorney said it was too far away from Argentina to go with my children there. I felt that was not totally true…my DNA told me I could do it. I finally made the decision and I was able to use those canceled tickets
I had from before the pandemic, two years later!
We got our Visa on March 15, 2022; 30 years after I had started the University and met Hernan. That was really meaningful for me.
We moved to Houston on March 25. As another meaningful event, we started our journey to America from Barcelona; the port from where my grandparents’ ship left Spain 70 years ago.

What inspired you to start your business?

I was very disappointed with the traditional medicine. So many years studying and practicing it and when I really needed it did not help. Not only for the results, that honestly could not have been changed anyway, but for the quality of life during the treatment. I wanted to keep helping people to stay healthy, but from another perspective. I was looking for natural alternatives to traditional medicine.

What is your favorite thing to make/produce?

My favorite blend is the Anti-inflammatory Tea, it is a great alternative for the medication for pain management in cases of inflammation, pain, chronic diseases. And also helps for Diabetes and High Blood Pressure.

Where are you from/where did you grow up?

    I am from Rosario, Argentina

Share a fun fact about yourself you’d like your customers to know!

I am well known as an intraoperative and clinical neurophysiologist. I have had my own practice at my family ‘s Hospital in Rosario; Sanatorio Mapaci SA. I am proud to have been a pioneer on intraoperative neurophysiology in Rosario since 2002. Smash & Squeeze

    Say hi to François!

    About Smash & Squeeze

At Smash & Squeeze, we specialize in refreshing drinks made onsite to order. We use fresh ingredients for everything we do. We make most of our own syrups and purées. We always have some fun add-ons, and we come up with new fun and beautiful concoctions all the time. We’re available for private and corporate parties.

When did you first get started?

September 2020 was my first market

What inspired you to start your business?

It was the pandemic. I needed a way to pay rent. I have been in the beverage industry for most of the last 20 years. From managing high-end liquor-wine stores, to being the the Beverage Director at several restaurants. I am a certified Sommelier. I have been the main buyer for both on & off premise establishments. When the Lockdown happened, I lost my job as a Beverage Director / Sommelier for a neighborhood fine-casual restaurant. After a few weeks of being locked inside, I started volunteering at a local urban hydroponic farm. They eventually hired me full time where I did everything from seeding plants to selling said plants at local famers markets for the farm. I decided then that I needed to find a way to have my own business at those open air markets. A fresh beverage stand where I am basically a bartender without booze seemed to be the most natural business for me to go into.

What is your favorite thing to make/produce?

    Lemonade

Where are you from/where did you grow up?

Britanny & Paris, France / West Texas
